Did Something Really Change Inside Your Body, Or Is This Just A Trick?

Your lungs did not become larger.
You did not become fitter.
Your heart did not become stronger.

Yet your breathing efficiency — your body’s ability to utilize oxygen — improved after just a few minutes of reduced breathing.

Most people assume that the more air they breathe, the more oxygen their body receives.
The reality is more surprising.

If you have ever blown up an air mattress or several balloons using only your breath, or if you have ever found yourself panting heavily after intense exercise such as running, then you have probably experienced one or more of the following:

  • dizziness
  • headache
  • nausea
  • feeling unwell
  • coughing
  • shortness of breath
  • or even a feeling of suffocation

And yet, during those moments, you were breathing more air than ever.

What if more air is not always better?

Contrary to popular belief, breathing more air than normal may deliver less oxygen to your cells, not more. (Read the physiological explanation here.)

Modern lifestyle has altered the way many people breathe. As a result, many people continuously breathe more air than their bodies actually need.

The more air your body becomes accustomed to, the sooner you feel air hunger after holding your nose following a normal exhalation. This is why the result of the breathing test falls short of the ideal 40–50 seconds.

This is why the Breathing Efficiency Index actually reflects your body’s current ability to utilize oxygen.

Just a few minutes of reduced breathing may improve oxygen delivery to your cells, organs, brain, and nervous system.

This improvement is reflected in your higher breathing test result.

However, the improvement you have just experienced is not yet permanent.

Lasting improvement requires regular practice.

Make this improvement more stable

A few minutes of guided breathing practice each day can help turn this short-term change into a more stable breathing habit.

Who Discovered This Phenomenon?

More than 70 years ago, Dr. Konstantin Buteyko noticed a striking pattern: behind many chronic diseases and modern lifestyle-related problems, there was often the same hidden factor — people were breathing more air per minute than their bodies actually needed.

He also observed that when these people gradually reduced and normalized their breathing, their bodies became better able to deliver and use oxygen, and their condition improved.

This led to the development of the Buteyko Method, whose goal is to gradually normalize breathing and improve the body’s oxygen delivery.

Why Is This Important for You?

Most people do not realize that their breathing has drifted away from normal.

They simply get used to it.

Over time, they may get used to:

  • blocked nose
  • snoring
  • restless sleep
  • afternoon fatigue
  • stress
  • declining physical performance.

Many people assume these are simply natural consequences of aging, genetics, or a busy lifestyle.

However, according to Professor Buteyko’s observations, these problems often share one common cause:

chronic overbreathing.

As breathing gradually returns to normal, many people notice more than just an improvement in their breathing test result.

They often sleep better, have more energy, feel calmer, concentrate more easily, and tolerate physical exertion better.

Which health problems did Professor Buteyko associate with chronic overbreathing?

Allergies

Asthma

COPD

High blood pressure

Panic attacks

Sleep apnea

Snoring

Chronic nasal congestion

What Does a Higher Breathing Efficiency Index Mean in Real Life?

People who practice the Buteyko Method often report:

• calmer, deeper sleep
• easier nasal breathing
• more energy
• better concentration
• greater physical endurance
• less stress
• a greater sense of inner calm

Experience How Your Own Body Responds to the Buteyko Breathing Method

We have created a free 3-part Buteyko breathing practice so you can experience how a few simple breathing exercises may affect your everyday quality of life.

Many people notice better concentration, greater inner calm, less stress, deeper and more restful sleep, more energy, improved endurance, greater physical capacity, less fear, more confidence, and a better overall sense of well-being.

For some people, this can mean a noticeable improvement in quality of life, motivation, and enjoyment of life. If you live with a chronic inflammatory condition, you may also notice changes in your symptoms — but this practice is educational and is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any disease.
